Winter Sports: the eco way!

January 27th, 2010 by Stacy

Check out this great article from our friends at Your Daily Thread about how to enjoy all of this snow we’ve been getting in an eco friendly way.

Recent rains and fresh snow may be piquing the interest of snow sport-loving Angelenos.   While going down the mountain may feel like you’re connecting with nature, the reality is that the ski/snowboard industry is not very sustainable (coal powered lifts, snow machines, heavy equipment, transportation, etc).

While most won’t give up the hobby (I certainly won’t) there are may ways you can lessen your impact and decrease your “snowprint.”  Here is an updated list of some of my favorite tips for greening your time on the slopes.

Buy Used: In Los Angeles there are tons of Play it Again Sports that sell quality used equipment. In 2002 I purchased a Burton board from them that was circa 1997; it still rides amazingly well (*note I only ride about once or twice a year). Tons of other used resources for used snow goods include Craigslist,Freecycle and Evogear.

Buy Green (if you have to buy new): Major lines like Burton are launching their own eco-boards made from sustainable materials. The Burton Eco Nico Board is made from a mix of recycled and new (but less toxic) materials. I really like independently owned Venture Snowboards that not only builds sustainable boards, but also operates its company on wind power.  Also visit this NY Times article about the overall greening of the snowboard industry here.

Wax the Natural Way:  Just like surf wax, most commercial snowboard wax is made from synthetic materials (aka petroleum).  Opt for one that will naturally biodegrade over time like those from Enviro Mountain Sports.

Find Sustainable Ways to Get There: If you’re heading up to the snow, carpool with your friends (I’m carpooling with four people this weekend.) If you’re flying to your destination, rather than purchase offsets, why not donate to an organization doing good work for the industry?

The Ski Area Citizen’s Coalition, a non-profit organization based out of Washington State and California, rates ski resorts that are Impacting Roadless Areas, logging Old Growth Forests, purchasing clean, renewable wind energy, using cleaner burning, biodegradable biodiesel, performing energy efficiency upgrades and more.

They also have a list of the ten best and the ten worst resorts in the U.S. Fortunately no California resort made it on to the ten worst list, and two of make the ten best cut. You can see the complete list here and view their grading criteria here.

Dress the Part: One of the innovators of green business is also the leader in eco-friendly clothes perfect to don in the drift. Patagonia has gear for men and women made from sustainable materials like organic cotton and that insulates just as well as conventional materials. Ladies should check out Rosa Snow’s line of eco-friendly and slightly girly snow clothes too.

Got some of your own tips for being green when you’re in the snow?  Share em with us in the comment section below.

Press from our WIB event!

January 21st, 2010 by Stacy

WIB_header_v3

We have been receiving lots of great feedback from our Women In Business event that was held on Jan 13th.  It was very exciting to have our event be sold out and even more exciting to hear back from so many of you!  Here are some responses from a few of the attendees.  Also check out some of the press we’ve been receiving on the event.  We would like to thank Michelle Rozzen and womentalksports.com for the wonderful blogs they wrote!

“As I’ve done events for years, I especially related to your story and applaud that you’ve followed your own path of success.  While all the panelists are obviously strong women who have created positions of power to do good, its refreshing to hear there are moments where you question your own confidence…but still plow ahead.  Sitting down with Julie Solwold in the breakout discussions was a huge opportunity…intense, professional, an expert in her field and truly inspiring.”–Amy Sorensen, Billabong Women’s Division

“Even though I work in real estate consulting instead of sports marketing, I was truly inspired by the accomplished women who spoke last night.  I was reminded so importantly that with enough hard work, passion and ingenuity, I can accomplish my goals.  I was reminded to live every day as I dream my career to be.”–Stephanie Moreland

“Thank you for an eye-opening event.  As someone who is just starting to research the sports marketing industry but doesn’t necessarily know where to go, I realized that there were opportunities within my CURRENT organization that could provide me with experience.  I plan on talking about upgrading my responsibilities this week.”–April Shunn Williams

How can we help Haiti?

January 16th, 2010 by Ray

How can we help such an overwhelmingly devastating tragedy like the earthquake in Haiti?  We did a bit of research to find out how we might be able to donate our time to help, and didn’t find that much–if you know of ways to volunteer time–please let us know!!

In the meantime, it sounds like all of the organizations need money primarily.

We did a little research to see how we can help here in Southern California:

Crisis Camp: TODAY, Saturday 1/16, the USC Annenberg School will be hosting CrisisCamp Haiti Los Angeles to bring together volunteers to collaborate on technology projects which aim to assist in Haiti’s relief efforts by providing data, information, maps and technical assistance to NGOs, relief agencies and the public.
Chad Catacchio (@chadcatcrisishaiti@gmail.com will be leading up a team.

This event is free and open to the public. You don’t have to be technical to volunteer time.  Also, you may show up at anytime during the day for as long as you wish – although obviously we will get the most done with the most people hours! http://crisiscamphaitilosangeles.eventbrite.com/

American Red Cross: Volunteer Orientations happening THIS WED in West LA Although you may not be going to Haiti to volunteer–your time will ultimately help American Red Cross get their resources to Haiti more quickly  http://redcrossla.org/volunteers/how-to-volunteer

Santa Monica Yoga is collecting gently worn shoes for Soles4Souls, to be sent to Haiti. You can also drop off shoes at any Sport Chalet. SMY teacher Nancy Goodstein will be spearheading this effort. For more information visit www.giveshoes.org.

Donating the proceeds of this Sunday’s 10:45 am class with Kyra Haglund at Santa Monica Yoga to Operation USA. Operation USA is a charity based in Los Angeles that is already sending aid to Haiti. For more information visit www.opusa.org

Gourmandise Desserts in Venice, CA is hosting a cupcake class to benefit the rebuilding of the Heartline Orphange in Haiti on January 26, 2010. There are 20 spots available in this delicious, hands-on class and we’ll be raffling off some very sweet treats before class. http://gourmandisedesserts.com/class.php?id=92
